I LOVE this song. It was never a single or anything, but a true Chicago classic. “scrapbook” was written and sung by Robert Lamm. It appeared on their 1976 release, ‘Chicago X’. Terry Kath also has a nasty little solo on this one. The horns are tight! This song hasn’t been performed since 1983.
It’s a shame that … It’s a shame that there is so little documentation of Terry Kath in his last few years with Chicago. Since the albums, other than CTA and III, featured little in the way of Kath’s soloing, you can’t really see his development as a unique artist except for live bootleg recordings and videos like these. That raw guitar on CTA really shaped into a fluid style over the years. Obviously this guy could burn with the best of them, with a unique style and sound, great chops and rock/ r&b roots.
I have never heard … I have never heard this live! Great! I always loved the track on the studio album, Cetera played some NASTY funk on his bass on the original studio version. I’ve almost worn out the grooves on my record from playing this song so much! Thanks!
I think if Terry … I think if Terry hadn’t died, he would have been headed for a great solo career. Is it true that he was scheduled to start rehearsals for his solo album the day after he died??
the terry days were … the terry days were the best, but the 89-94 years with dawayne were a close second. If you like Terry (who didn’t) , then you probably liked Dawayne. Terry was the best though, better than hendrix.
Man Kath was a … Man Kath was a monster…plain and simple. I think this is a great solo by one of the best guitarists out there; imagine if he were here today…man…
That los of magic … That los of magic in the band happened to the Chicago a long time ago, following the death of Terry Kath. They were never the same after that. Nothing that came after ever lived up to the promise that the original band had shown. I saw the original band many times, but I only went to one concert post-Terry Kath. The magic was gone, and there was no point trying to get it back…..
I have to agree … I have to agree with Chicagogumball. The band died the day Kath did. I suppose they would’ve all gone their own direction anyways. Peter liked the slow balalad style. After Kath dies they sounded almost like Blood, Sweat & Tears. BS&T w/Al Cooper was better than Chicago after Kath died. But Chicago was always better with Kath.
On the Chicago X … On the Chicago X album, you can barely hear Robert Lamm’s vocals; here, at least Lamm’s voice is more up-front…I really thot a lot of the tunes on that album just weren’t produced very well…
Yes, not a hit song … Yes, not a hit song from Chicago X but an underrated gem from that album due to Terry Kath’s funky, fiery guitar work. The tune should’ve been longer on the album. Thanks for this live performance. In fact, this entire Essen Germany concert should be released on DVD.
I was at that … I was at that concert in Germany age 13 !!!
it was for me like going to church seeing my youthidol Terry Kath. He was one of the most underrated musicans of his time. He was such a great musican, singer, Guitarplayer. No one could play lead – rythmguitar and sing that well then he and this allways with so much soul and passion. Terry your gone but never forgotton. RIP
THe band died the … THe band died the day Terry left us. If you want to see a grreat band, look at these videos. I walked out on the new band on their second song. Terry was the king.
Terry was … Terry was definitely an awesome guitar player. I remember the 70′s well and he never got a mention from anyone. It was all Clapton, Beck and Page, blah, blah, blah and, though they were great, Terry was just as good, if not better…like I just said under “Uptown”. He was part of a larger thing, and actually was recording a solo album when he, tragically, shot himself (accidently).
If Bobby Lamm was … If Bobby Lamm was Chicago’s heart and Jimmy Pankow (and the horns) its backbone, then Terry Kath was its soul. Hendrix (a huge Kath fan, by the way) and Clapton may be 1a and 1b in the great guitarist pantheon, but make mine Kath.

This is my favorite off of Chicago, and really, the most well-written song on the album.
And yet, If You Leave Me Now took the number one spot.
